Welcome to Happiness 101. Your brain has the ability to store four different chemicals that relate to the feeling of happiness. Upbeat activities can easily release feelings of joy and combat mental stress and tension. The next time you are feeling down or discouraged, practice one (or all) of these activities to boost your mood.


Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter made in the brain. Basically, it acts as a chemical messenger between neurons. Dopamine is released when your brain is expecting a reward. When you come to associate a certain activity with pleasure, mere anticipation may be enough to raise dopamine levels.

  • Celebrate small wins

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is associated with a warm, fuzzy feeling. This hormone promotes feelings of love, social bonding, and well-being. It has been tested as an anti-anxiety drug.

  • Holding hands with a loved one

  • Extended hugs

  • Pay compliments

Endorphins are also referred to as the pain killer hormone. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.
